Ask the Veterinarian/dog bowel habits

Question
I think it has been 2 full days since my 11 year old spaniel has had bowel movement.  Vet said she had colitis and infected anal glands.  They expelled the anal sac and gave prescription metronidazole 250 mg. Is this causing constipation?  Her appetite seems good. She is peeing less often as well, but she hates going out in rain and it's been raining for 3 days.

Answer
Anne -

You dog has two reasons why she is not using the bathroom - she does not like going in the rain and her anal sacs may be painful.

You can try to increase the amount of fiber in her diet.  Increased fiber is may help to prevent constipation and it may also help her anal sac problem.

Ask your veterinarian if the anal sacs are inflamed and if you can get pain medication to make your pet more comfortable.
