Ask the Veterinarian/Anal glands

Question
Hello, I have a basic question about a dogs anal glands. I know alittle about them but cant find the answer to one of my questions. My dog sometimes has a problem empting his and sometimes he can do it himself. This time, it usually happens every month, he secreted a little liquid every once and a while, as in about every few hours for about 1 week. He was fine and I made sure and kept an eye on his to make sure they did not become infected or need vet attention (he has already been seen previously and the vet educated me about the issue and suggested I see if the dog can empty them himself). My question is, is it normal for a dog to empty the glands alittle bit at a time for a few days? Also, the glands first emptied a brownish thin liquid and now he is empting a light yellow almost cream thicker liquid, is this normal to be different colors and consistency? He is still acting normal and not showing any of the negative signs the vet told me to look for (scooting, paying attention to bottom, swelling, redness, ect) but I am curious if this is normal to have the secretions change like that. Thanks for your help.

The anal sacs should empty whenever the dog has a bowel movement.  The dog may also use them as a defense mechanism when he is threatened or placed in a  threatening position.

The material excreted by the anal sacs can be dark to light brown.  Have your veterinarian examine your dog's anus and examine the anal sacs to determine if they are infected.  He/she should be able to provide you with treatment if the anal sacs are infected or inflamed.
