Question
I would like to know if seizures are common in Chihuahua dogs. I have a Chihuahua mix dog and she recently had an episode similar to a seizure. I am a nurse and have seen people have seizures and most know when they are about to have one. My dog seemed to know that something was wrong with her then she started shivering and couldn't walk. After about 3 or 4 minutes she was a little weak but quickly regained her perky attitude. She had a similar episode about 8 months ago but it only lasted about a minute then she was fine. What kind of test, if any, can be done to diagnosis her problem?
Thanks,
Shiela

Answer
Sheila-

Seizures are not necessarily common in Chihuahuas but low blood sugar is common with some Chihuahuas.  The low blood sugar can sometimes be the cause of a seizure.  There are several other factors that can cause a dog to have a seizure such as a brain tumor or a shunt.

Have your dog thoroughly examined by a veterinarian  as soon as possible.
