Ask the Veterinarian - Cushings Disease

Expert: Dr. Louis N. Gotthelf - 6/29/2009

Question
My dog has Cushing Disease.for a month now my Vet has her taking Mitotane 750mg twice a week, but  her hormones are still all screwed up, I have to make 911 visits to the Vet at least twice a week, WHY.

Answer
Mitotane kills off the adrenal gland.  Only a part of the adrenal gland makes cortisol.  There are many other hormones that are made by the adrenal and when these hormones are not made, other problems occur.   Your dog may need to be receiving prednisone while on treatment?
