Ask the Veterinarian - Skin Irritation

Expert: Dr. Louis N. Gotthelf - 6/30/2009

Question
We have a lab that has red bumps with scabs in her ear and there are similar ones on her front legs and belly.  They are causing her to itch a lot.  Any suggestions?
Thank you

Answer
This looks like self trauma.  Does she have an ear infection?  SOmetimes these lesions on the legs are from licking.  If there are pustules, there is probably a bacterial skin infection.  Check with your vet to see if he needs antibiotics or steroids for the itching.
