Ask the Veterinarian/Red spots on dog's lower abdomen

Question
My 8 month old silky terrier has various sizes of small reddish, dark brown spots on her lower abdomen and right next to her vagina.  They do not seem to bother her when touched, but she does seem to be licking the area rather excessively.  Should I take her to the vet or be concerned?

Answer
Most likely, this is a Staph bacterial infection. It is very common in puppies.  If she is OK with it, let it go.  Just wash it with an antibacterial soap.  It will help her develop her natural immunity to this bacteria.  If it bothers her, the vet may need to prescribe some antibiotics.
