Ask the Veterinarian/Springer Cocker Spaniel Smelly Ears

Question
We have a 2 year old Springer Cocker Spaniel.  Her ears give off a terrible odor.  What is the cause and what is the best way to clearn her ears? Thank you so much.

Answer
In Springers, they are very prone to external ear disease.  This could be a bacterial or a yeast infection.  Your vet can tell you what is causing this odor and they can prescribe ear cleaners and specific treatment for the odors.  Most of the time, there is also some type of skin disease that sets the ear disease off.
