Ask the Veterinarian/Dog vomiting

Question
QUESTION: My dog is a male Schnauzer Whippet mix. This morning he ate around 14 Ibuprofen after chewing the bottle open. We called a vet and he said to put hydrogen peroxide down his throat. We did, and he vomited around 7 times. He is still vomiting, is there something wrong still?

ANSWER: He might have vomited too much and now he could be electolyte imbalanced. You should call your vet back and let him know this.

He might have you give small amounts of Pedialyte at home or he may suggest IV fluids. This is pretty serious, so I would call the vet right away or an emergency clinic near you. Some vets take their own patients so call them first.

But DO call!!

QUESTION: Thank you.
This is great, now I have another dog she is a Britnese Spaniel/ Jack Russel. She ate pepto bismol, and our vet said he wouldn't worry about that. But she is throwing up sand and water around every ten minutes. Our local vet is not answering the telephone.

Answer
Your dogs must have a secret method to get into your medicine cabinet! I have never heard of a dog willingly eat pepto bismol but it won't harm her. However, the sand and water part is what confuses me. When did you speak to the vet about the pepto bismol and when did she start vomiting? Could she have eaten some of the ibuprofen also?

Sand? Is she vomiting a lot, once in a while, large quantities? Is there another vet you can call? Doesn't your vet use an answering service? If so, call them and explain the situation. You may have to resort to an emergency clinic as I mentioned before.

No matter what, you need to get them into a vet's, especially the first dog. Get back on the phone or start looking in your local yellow pages.
There isn't much more I can do for you here. Make sure there is no food or water down for the dogs to get into. If they drink a bunch of water now they will just keep vomiting.
