Ask the Veterinarian/Shihtzu ~constant swallowing

Question
My 2 year old shihtzu has episodes, at least once a month, where he continually swallows. He is visibly uncomfortable because he scoots around trying to lie down and get comfortable. It begins usually during the evening and his is usually okay by morning. Our current vet has no idea what is wrong. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Have your dog examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible.  Excessive swallowing may indicate a gastrointestinal problem. Request that your vet perform bloodwork and take abdominal radiographs which are essential to diagnosing the problem.
