Ask the Veterinarian/Revolution - Worming

Question
Recently got a new 8 week old puppy. Took it to a local vet and got a scheduale set up for all its vaccines and worming. The Vet gave me Revolution (Selamectin) as a general dewormer for round worm as such. From reading the manufacturer website, and other articles. It stats the product is only good for de worming in cats not dogs.

I plan to call my Vet and verify I got the right stuff, but I would also like to ask here. To see if I should get a second opinion.

Thanks
Jason

Answer
well after doing a bit of reading myself I have found that you are correct Jason, Revolution does not treat round worms in dogs. It does in cats, but not dogs.

That will tell you what it does do. You might want to print that out for your vet to show him.

Make sure you get some Panacur or some other type of wormer to start this puppy out with. Once a month heartworm will keep him worm free after a few doses.

Another thing, I don't personally trust any type of dermal heartworm prevention. I would put this dog on Heartgard or Sentinel if I were you. My dog has been on Sentinel for over 10 yrs and she is totally heartworm and flea free. So is my cat and my yard has no fleas in it.

Have fun with your pup but let the vet know what you read. They might consider it an *off label usage* to worm puppies but I would insist on some Panacur.
