Ask the Veterinarian/ammonia cat smell

Question
I am trying to find a natural and noninvasive answer for my tenant. Her cat has always has a strong urine smell. It is very offensive even though she cleans the litter right after he goes in it. Is there something that can be given to him to reduce or get rid of this ammonia smell? She has tried different foods but nothing seems to work. I am thinking something needs to be put in his water??

Answer
Using a low protein diet specifically designed for kidney patients usually reduces the amount of nitrogen in the urine and will decrease the intensity of the ammonia smell.  Using a cat food with water added will also tend to dilute the urine and the smell.
