Ask the Veterinarian/Discharge

Question
We have a 1 year old visla who has had all vaccinations, etc.  We recently noticed a yellow vaginal discharge.  She has been spayed. We took her to the vet who took a urine sample and sent it out to be cultured which came back negative.  She has been on antibiotics for 7 days and still has the discharge.  Please advise.

Answer
She might need another antibiotic. She might have a fungal infection, although these are very rare in the bladder. She might have a foreign body inside her vestibule, the area that you see from the back where her urethra and vaginal opening are.

I would give it another few days until the antibiotics are gone and then approach the vet with these suggestions.

Not all discharges are from the bladder or vagina, but can be from an irritation. Dogs are really good at getting things up in there. So if the infection isn't gone then I would ask for a physical exam under sedation to look up inside of her vestibule and the surrounding area inside.
