Ask the Veterinarian/shih tzu

Question
Our whole family have been fighting terrible colds and now our shih tzu seems to be coughing and gagging. He has also vomited 3 times. He seems to have energy still and we have encouraged him to drink as much as possible. Is this just a cold and is there something we can give him to help him get over it?

Answer
My concern here would be is this a cold virus or a type of dog flu that he has? Remember that dogs can get the swine flu, or H1N1 from humans. Dogs don't really get 'colds' and especially not from us, but they do get upper respiratory infections.

When a dog is gagging or retching, they are not vomiting but just trying to clear out their throats.

He could have a lung infection, swollen tonsils, a sore throat or any number of things that fall under the URI area.

I would take him in to the vets as soon as you are able to to make sure he isn't really sick with pneumonia or one of the above problems.

That is the only way you will know what he really has and how to treat it.
