Ask the Veterinarian/dog bleeding

Question
We just adopted a 1 year old lab and chatahula mix and now her vaginae is starting to spot bleed and its swollen. We are worried because the pound said she shouldn't go into heat til she is 2 and she did come in contact with a black male lab. Could she be pregnant?

Answer
Whoever told you that she wouldn't go into heat until she was two should be reprimanded for telling you that. Dogs go into heat every 6 months starting between 6 months to 12 months. Yes, she is going to be pregnant.

You need to get her into the vets as soon as the swelling is down and get her spayed. This is why dogs out here are spayed before they are adopted out. Owners rarely get this done on time and then more puppies are born.

Please break the cycle and get her spayed soon- you have a week or so until her bleeding stops and the swelling goes down.

You got her from the pound and that is awesome. But dogs keep ending up in the pound and being killed because of false information like this. If this were my dog I would ask the pound to pay for the spay!
