Question
I would like to know when it is safe to allow one of my family members male dog near my baby girl again. She started bleeding on the 10.01.2012 and i was told if i want her to be covered i should bring her in on the 21.01.2012 to a male of my choice. I dont want her to be covered just yet as it is only her 2nd time and my cousin's yorkie is o big. When will it be safe for them to be around each other again without here being an accidental pregnancy?

Answer
Dogs are in heat for 21 days total. If a dog starts bleeding on the 10th of the month, then she was in heat for a week before that. The week after they stop bleeding is when they can be bred, which in her case would have been from the 16th to the 19th. Then they are in heat for another 7 days or so.

So you really should wait another week or two before letting her near him. Once her swelling is completely gone she is out of her estrus and into anestrus, which "an absence of heat."
