Ask the Veterinarian/Cat poop

Question
within the last month once a week my 5.5 yr old male neuter cat has been pooping on the floor. It's not a whole piece of excrument it's just a small segment. His box is clean so I'm not sure if he's being spiteful about something or if there is a medical problem. His diet or environment has not changed.

Answer
Hi Tiffany,

You may please check the following:

Have you changed litter brands lately?,Are you changing the litter often enough?,Is the litter box big enough? The box should be 1.5 times the length of the cat,Is the litter box in a quiet place away from sight?,Has the cat been declawed?Declawing is very painful and may make some cats reluctant to use their paws to bury the poop.Spite may not be a reason.

Do monitor the weight of the cat,and also any changes in the frequency of such behavior. A  veterinary medical examination is always better to rule in or out any suspected disease condition in these circumstances.
