Gaston
I have a 7 yr old Bernese Mtn dog who started intermittent urinary Incontenance a year or so ago.  It has become increasingly frequent, and he urinates while walking.  His urine has been checked in the past for infection and has come back clean.  Vet wants to do X-rays totaling over $700 of which I don't have.  He had an undecended testicle and when he got fixed, she had to do a fair amount of exploring in order to find it.  She said it was quite buried.  He was fixed at just over 12  months.  Any suggestions and thoughts and is there medication to control this.  Currently our financial situation has taken a downturn and vet visits are a luxury at this time.  He doesn't appear to be in pain, he does have some arthritis issues and is on rimydyl for that. As soon as our $$$$situation changes, vet visits are the first thing on the list.  Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi,
There are a number of reasons like  Hormonal imbalance, Weak bladder sphincter, Urinary tract infection, Urinary stones,Spinal injury or degeneration, Protruding intervertebral disc Prostate disorders,Presence of other diseases that cause excessive water consumption, such as diabetes, kidney disease, hyperadrenocorticism, Congenital abnormalities, Anatomic disorders,Certain medications etc for this.Detailed investigations may be necessary to find the right cause and appropriate treatment.

You may try a prescription medicine for the time being till detailed investigations are made.Proin(phenylpropanolamine)  is a prescription medication used in the management of urinary incontinence in dogs.Proin will not cure the incontinence, but will help manage it. It may take several days of treatment to see the full effect of the medication. To remain effective, Proin must be given continually. Stopping treatment will cause recurrence of the symptoms. Dosage-Dogs: 1.5–2 mg/kg, orally once to three times daily.Mind you, these are not without side effects. So go through the literature before administration.
