Question
Dear Dr Anand

Is it necessary to provide tetanus vaccine or injection for pets viz Dog, Cat, Horse, Bird, Fish suffering from wounds, bites?.

Thanks
Prashant

Answer
Tetanus toxemia is caused by a specific neurotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani in necrotic tissue. Almost all mammals are susceptible, although dogs and cats are relatively more resistant than any other domestic or laboratory mammal. Birds are quite resistant.Horses and lambs seem to be the most sensitive of all species, with the possible exception of people.

Even though it is not scientifically based, yearly booster injections of toxoid in animals are advised; in people the toxoid is given every 10 yr. The toxoid vaccination interval is currently debated among vaccine recommendations for sport horses. Mares should be vaccinated during the last 6 wk of pregnancy and foals vaccinated at 5–8 wk of age. In high-risk areas, foals may be given tetanus antitoxin immediately after birth and every 2–3 wk until they are 3 mo old, at which time they can be given toxoid. The decision to vaccinate lambs or calves depends on the prevalence of the disease in the area.
