Question
I have a 14 year old Lab that has developed an ear hematoma due to a skin allergy that is currently be addressed, I know that surgery is required to fix it but I'm scared to have him put under for surgery because he is older and his health is declining. Any advice? Thank You in advance!

Answer
The only way to get one to heal without deforming the ear is with surgery.  It is not a major surgery and it is a relatively quick procedure, but it does require anesthesia.  If the dog is healthy and his bloodwork looks good, anesthetics are safe for older dogs.
