Ask the Veterinarian/Cat pain

Question
My female cat is 12 yrs old. Spade and declawed. The past year now she doesn't always poop in the litter box. She will often try to go in the box but will cry loudly and take off running. Wherever she ends up is where she poops. We've tried 3 rounds of antibiotics. Probiotics. Anti-inflammatory medications. Sensitive systems diet. Miralax daily. Nothing has changed this problem. Vet did X-rays which were clear of tumors or masses. No mega colon. No arthritis. Rectal exam didn't show inflamed anal glands (and she doesn't have any of the classic symptoms of that). No bleeding. After she poops, she's totally herself again and wants to play and eat. We are out of ideas. We are considering having her put to sleep because we cannot find a solution and with 3 little kids in the house, I can't be having cat poop under beds or anywhere else. She very rarely (but once in a while) poops in the box without the crying/running so it's not every time but probably 9/10 times she poops somewhere else. It's not diarrhea like and it's not hard or small. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

Answer
Hi Angle,

Seems like you have done almost every thing from your side to find out the cause.Obviously there is some pathology involved since your cat feels pain and hence not using the litter may not be a behavioral problem. But keep  watch on her weight, cause diagnosis of intestinal cancer can be hit-and-miss,even if a number of samples are screened.

Miralax for cats is fine for short-term use, but should not be used long term.Try a hairball remedy such as Tomlyn Laxatone Tuna Flavored Hairball Lubricant.
