Ask the Veterinarian/Ear Problem

Question
I have a lab who continuously has problems with one or both ears. Twice the vet has perscribed Mometemax. It works for the duration of the treatment, but to no avail it keeps coming back. "Jewel" itches until it bleeds in the ear and with that comes the oder. We've tried switching food as the vet said it could be an allergy. I'm at a loss as Jewel is very uncomfortable. What do we do?

Answer
Mometamax contains a powerful steroid that will make the dog feel better while the steroid is in the ear.  However, the other components, gentamycin and clotrimazole do not release well from the oily vehicle and may not affect the bascteria or yeasts  living inthe ear.  If your Lab has other allergies, then he may need to be on some steroids or ATOPICA, a new drug for allergies.
