Question
I have a Landseer Newfie that is experiencing hair loss on his chest, groin, and "arm pit" areas.  Today rash-like scabbing appeared on his chest, along with a red sore in his groin region and a large scabby spot in one of his arm pits.  I called my vet, but she wouldn't give any info over the phone and I have no money to take him to the vet.  Please help! I am very worried about him.  Thank you.

Answer
Until you get the dog seen by the vet, you can use dog shampoo on these areas.  If you can find a medicated shampoo with benzoyl peroxide in it, that may help disinfect the skin.  This is most likely a bacteril skin infection and it can get worse without medical treatment.  Most vets will hold a check for you so that the dog can get some relief.  Ask your vet.
