Ask the Veterinarian/black wax build up

Question
I have a 22 month old little long haired chihuahua who is an inside dog.  She has had black "wax" in her ears since I got her at age 2 months.  She has been to the vet he gives her an antibiotic, clears it up for a week or so and it is right back.  Has a very stong odor.  I clean her ears at least once a week with a q-tip.  This same little girl has a "cherry eye". Thanks for your input.  Nancy and "Libbee"

Answer
Often these pups have allergies that cause the waxy buildup and infection. Some of these infections are bacterial, while others are from yeasts.  Your vet will need to find out what type of infection is present before treating specifically. Ask your vet for an ear cleaning solution that will allow you to maintain the ear canal wax free. Often these are used twice a week.
