Ask the Veterinarian - bumpy skin followed by baldness-cat

Expert: Dr. Louis N. Gotthelf - 6/16/2004

Question
My 8 year old spayed indoor female has bumpy patches under her neck, which eventually result in baldness. There are some crusty hair folicles with hair attached on her fur, where she has scratched herself.  What could this be?

Answer
is is most often a flea allergy.  The skin disease you are describing is called miliary dermatitis. Ask your vet to give your cat a shot of DEPO MEDROL. That is along acting steroid that will calm the skin.  Also use a flea control product such as Advantage to keep new fleas off the cat.
