Ask the Veterinarian/dog dry skin

Question
Hi,
I have a two-year old Beagle/Fox Terrier/Dachshund mix who has developed a persistant itch over the last two months.  It got considerably worst after a bath three days ago, and now she and her sister are always rubbing their backs on the floor, and scratching at their ears, or sides.  Sometimes they scratch so hard their feet thumbs off of the floor.  What could cause this?  We have been feeding them the same food, and nothing out of the ordinary has been given to them.  I would appreciate any advice you can give me.
Thank you,
Jamie Lawrence

Answer
Some shampoos contain proteins that cause a topical allergic response.  My suggestion to you is to use a special hypoallergenic shampoo, which is available from most vets.  If that does the same thing, then you may need to use a bath oil or a skin conditioner after the baths.
