Continued steroid therapy can be harmful, but it is good on a short term basis.

I would check for an autoimmune problem as well as a problem with yeast.  I have found that letting our AHT go without clothes in the summer helps as well as making sure the air isn't too dry.  Have the thyroid function tested as well.
