Ask the Veterinarian/lump on German Shepherd's ear

Question
My 9-year-old German Shepherd suddenly developed a large lump (approximately 2 inches in diameter and 1 inch deep) in his right outer ear. It is soft but he is unable to hold that ear up normally so it is drooping. His appetite, elimination, and activity levels are all normal. Is there anything we can do??

Answer
This sounds like an aural hematoma.  It is an accumulation of blood under the skin of the ear flap.  Often dogs have an ear infection when they have this.  Unfortunately, the only treatment for these is surgery, so let your vet look at the ear to  make sure.
