Question
Hello,

I was wondering what mange looks like.  My dog has been itching and pulling his hair out.  He is on Science Diet Sensitive Skin and I have been giving him Benadryl for children.  It does not seem to be helping.  Thank you.

Answer
There are 2 types of mange, which are caused by small insects called mnites.  One is sarcoptic mange whichusually shows up as irritation and hair loss on the ear tips, elbows and chest.  This is contagious to people.  The other type of mange is called demodex and usually shows up as hair loss on the face and legs.  You should let a veterinarian look at the dog to see what is causing this.  Benadryl rarely helps itchy dogs.
