Assembly of God/Question on marriage
Expert: Brian Thompson - 7/23/2009
QuestionI was wondering if you could tell me what is wrong wtih people of the same sex getting married. I mean, on a "nuts and bolts" level. I am hearing the debate on both sides but I don't think anyone has yet defined on a practical level why it is wrong - unless it just got past me. I am open to hearing anything and everything. I am not looking to lure anyone into an argument just so you know, I am just trying to collect and weigh all the information I can, I am open. So if you can give me some information in that area, on a nuts and bolts practical level I would be very much appreciative for the food for thought.
Thank you.
Robert
AnswerHi Richard
The Word of God is very clear about homosexuality, homosexual practices are not to be condoned. I'm not going to give you chapter and verse on this but it is very plain and Scripture even eludes to illness which is associated with the practice. Scripture also proscribes other practices which our society has no problem with. Any Christian who willfully disregards the Word of God is placing themselves in a position where they may loose their salvation, God is merciful and forgiving but he cannot disregard his Word. When God decided that Adam required a companion he created a woman, a creature different to the man, clearly this sets a standard right from the beginning.
The purpose of marriage is to provide a nurturing environment for children to be born and raised. What purpose could marriage have if you are not contemplating the natural result of sexual relations? This is entirely different to lust and infatuation. It is very important that as a society we don't confuse children about sexuality and that we have clear moral boundaries otherwise our society will eventually decline. So just because a minority want to to live a life style which rejects scriptural values doesn't mean we have to overthrow long held teachings and tradition to make them happy.
