Assembly of God/Concerns

Question
QUESTION: Evg. Starrs,
I am concerned about the spiritual condition of the AG. I have seen and heard of many of it's church's becoming "seeker friendly". The accepting and promoting of such things as the purpose driven life, passing out the Velvet Elvis book, and turning their backs on the Pentecostal message. Is it too late? Have they gone too far? Or do you also accept these things. I am interested in your thoughts.
It also concerns me to read in your profile "Psychology/Sociology".
Thanks,
S.

ANSWER: While I do indeed share some of your concerns, I am not here to pass judgement on anyone.
The Bible warns us about this petty and cruel action, reminding us that those we consider unworthy will answer to their Lord, and He is able to make them stand.
What exactly are your concerns about my having studied psychology and sociology? I assure you that I stood firmly against the tide of secular so called wisdom, winning many of my fellow students and even a lecturer to Christ. I earned a high GPA because although my arguments often went against what was being taught, they were well girded with sufficient research to withstand scrutiny. If you think there is something wrong with the study of sociology you would condemn the sons of Issachar, who understood the times they were living in. If you would condemn the study of psychology you would condemn the notion of common sense, because ultimately the subject is really an investigation into common sense about human behaviour.
I feel that you are very critical. Is there some root of bitterness that you have allowed to defile your pure regenerate heart?

QUESTION: Evg. Starrs,
No my brother, I assure you there is no "root of bitterness". My heart is broken to see and hear what the AG is accepting and promoting. I have but a deep concern for the spiritual direction the AG is taking. This is from the head down. It is not my intention to "pass judgment". But you must know that the AG (as a whole, certainly not all local congregations) has ceased to preach and teach victory through the finished work of Christ on the Cross, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Yes, it's still in their doctrinal statement, but now they promote psychology, sociology, along with other programs (purpose driven life, G12, ect...) as the means of victory.

As to you studying psychology and sociology, I meant no offence. As I stated above, these are secular means of victory. You must admit that at their core, they deny the finished work of Christ as the only means of salvation and victory over the flesh, the devil, and the world. Once again, please do not take this as an insult. I am your brother in Christ who is concerned about the state of the AG church. What are your thoughts?
S.

Answer
Sorry S.
I can't speak for the AG as a whole - in my church we still preach the Gospel. I understand where your coming from, but you shouldn't be surprised. Every denomination starts with a move of God and finishes with the stagnation of men! The AG is no different, and if they haven't reached the dismal low you described it is probably only a matter of time. Meanwhile God will continue to seek out those whose hearts are perfect before Him and use them for His glory - regardless of denominational ties.

The real question we need to ask is a question we can only truly ask of ourselves . .  ."Am I the man God wants me to be"?

If more of us would ask that question, more churches would be reflecting the will of God.

The Assemblies of God in Australia is one of my favorite denominations. It has some variations from churches with the same name in other countries, but most of these are subtle. I can answer questions about the history and operations of this denomination in many countries.

Experience

I have ministered in 23 countries, often in AoG churches. I was trained for cross cultural ministry by the World Harvest Institute, which is the Missionary Orientation Program of the Assemblies of God in Australia.

Education/Credentials
I hold a B.A in Psychology/Sociology, and am currently completing my Masters in Teaching. I am a Graduate of the World Harvest Institute Missionary Orientation Program and have obtained other qualifications in Youth Work, Workplace Assessment and Training, Mentoring Church Planters, and many more.
