Assembly of God/Speaking in tongues

Question
Hello.  I am very familiar with A/G doctrine and teachings.  I have attended an A/G church and been in leadership in A/G churches for most of my adult life, although I am not presently in teh A/G (no reason ... found another good church).

One difficulty I have with A/G teaching is with speaking in tongues.  I do pray in tongues on an almost daily basis, and have since I was a child.  My question is, why does the A/G place such importance on this gift?  The bible actually sayse very little about it.  No more than prophecy, healing, wisdom, etc.

So why the preocuppation with tongues?

Thanks, and God bless

Mike

Answer
Hi Mike

Pentacostal churchs place an emphasis on tongues because it is the initial evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. praying in tongues edifies the believer, that is, it builds up spiritually. AOG church's I am associated with don't place undue emphasis in tongues so it might be a local thing. Tongues is one of the gifts and has a very powerful purpose as a prayer language not recognised by many. Ephesians 6 says to pray in the Spirit and as part of the armor of God Prayer in the Spirit is very important.

You do need to realise that the Bible says very little about many Christian doctrines. Many teachings originate in just one verse. The Gifts of the Spirit are not mentioned by Paul often, but the reality is they are mentioned and they do exist.

We need to make sure we major on the important things, Jesus.
