Question
Is it a sin to have an eating disorder?  I really need to know.

Answer
Hi Grace,
The fact that you describe it as an eating disorder means that you have already decided that the answer is no. The question you need to ask yourself is whether or not the illness would continue without being supported by sin.
For example: A disorder involving overeating (including Bullemia) may be associated with the sin of Gluttony. A disorder of not eating (such as anorexia) may be associated with fear, doubt, self loathing, etc.
( All of these things make you feel like a victim - but they are sins that lead to bondage).
Eating disorders (like all illnesses) are destructive and opposed to the purposes of God in our lives (That you might have life - and life more abundantly! However it is often argued that He will at times use such things to deal harshly with us or test us).
Anything that opposes your transformation into that which Christ has called us to is undoubtedly sinful.
The sufferer of a disorder should assess whether they have come to identify themselves by the disorder. Do they say "I am anorexic" or "I am Gay". In such cases the person has exalted the disorder above that which God says of them, and this too is sin.
Blessings!
Matthew.

Experience

I have ministered in 23 countries, often in AoG churches. I was trained for cross cultural ministry by the World Harvest Institute, which is the Missionary Orientation Program of the Assemblies of God in Australia.

Education/Credentials
I hold a B.A in Psychology/Sociology, and am currently completing my Masters in Teaching. I am a Graduate of the World Harvest Institute Missionary Orientation Program and have obtained other qualifications in Youth Work, Workplace Assessment and Training, Mentoring Church Planters, and many more.
