Asthma/oxygen and asthma

Question
Is the oxygen you buy for tourches safe to use in an asthmatic emergency?

Answer
Terry,

In an asthmatic emergency, the airways close down, and the oxygen isn't getting to the lung tissue. I do not believe that the oxygen used for oxy-acetylene torches is medical grade, and would not use it without 1) speaking with your physician, since pure oxygen can burn out your lung tissue if not delivered by a metered device, and 2)if you have such an approved device, and the therapy was approved by your specialist, you need to verify with the supplier that the product is medical grade.

There are specific procedures to follow in an asthmatic medical emergency, and if your situation warrants it, get the training. I've given classes in rural areas where it may take 1/2 hour to get emergency assistance. Training in this situation would potentially be life-saving.

Hope this helps!
