Question
The pastor's wife at our small church of 30 people caught the H1N1 flu a couple weeks ago.  She is still fighting it, and they have 5 children that come to church too.  My husband and I haven't been going because we don't want to catch the swine flu (and I have asthma too.)  How long (in your opinion) would be advised to stay away from the church?  We're afraid it will start spreading to other people.  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Merla,

The period of time in which a patient is contagious begins 1 day prior to symptoms, through 7 days following. It is to be cautioned though, that is the patient is symptomatic after 7 days, that they should still be considered contagious.

The difficult issues for you are two-fold: 1) a patient with asthma is at much greater risk of a severe respiratory reaction, and 2) in spite of all the warnings, people will foolishly go to work, school, and church in the belief that THEY don't have the flu, and put everyone else at risk.

In a family with asthma, definitely seek out help from your health department to get the H1N1 vaccine as soon as possible. That would be your greatest protection. Don't forget to get the regular flu vaccine if you haven't done so. If you recently received the regular flu shot, you need to wait 2 weeks before getting the H1N1.

I hope your church has posted a strict policy to adhere to at this time.

Sincerely,

Marc
