Asthma/Do I have asthma or what?

Question
Hi,

lately i've been experiencing what can only be described as shortness of breath (i feel like I am constantly needing to sigh or inhale heavily) as well as tightness in my upper back (like my back constantly needs to be cracked - right between my shoulder blades) and discomfort in my neck. I'm wondering if this sounds anything like adult onset asthma? I'm 31 and I smoke. I don't have any history of asthma in my family (I don't think). I do have multiple sclerosis.

any thoughts?

Answer
Hi Jason,

This does not sound like adult onset asthma. Unlike child onset, which predominantly is due to elevated allergic response, adult onset is generally not allergen related, but due to environmental exposures, e.g.: ozone, chemicals in the work place and other job related exposures, are more typical.

Could this be anxiety related, or secondary to your smoking, yes. If I knew what meds you have been on in the past, as well as currently taking, I could evaluate whether your symptoms are drug-induced side effects. The best way to rule out what it transpiring would to have spirometry done to assess lung function.

If you'd like me to evaluate your meds, follow up with a note listing what you are on, and dosing regimen.

I hope this gives you some guidance.

Sincerely,

Marc
