Question
HI,

I have a cavity in my chest where my sternum should be. it is over an inch and a half deep. i have athesma and have been having chest pains. i am 17. could my athesma and pain be connected to my hole, or is it a completely benign condition?

Answer
Hi Mike,

To be honest, I cannot really answer this. Chest tightness, as potentially the pain may be related to a lack of control. But this would be best determined through lung function testing. You didn't indicate whether you are having breathing difficulties.

Another aspect could be that the depression could be putting pressure on the lung beneath it, creating a hot spot resulting in the pain. Again, this would have to be something your physician would have to ascertain.

I wish I could be of more help, but I feel the best thing for you to do is have the situation fully evaluated by a pulmonologist.

Sincerely,

Marc
