Question
Here's the problem.  I have had moderate to severe asthma since I was a child.  At one point doctors thought I had Cystic Fibrosis.  What are the highest calorie/fat burning exercises that won't trigger my asthma? Please help!

Answer
Amanda,
When it comes to exercising with asthma, everyone is different as far as what will and what wont trigger their asthma. Usually, one of the most tolerated exercise activities for asthmatics is swimming, though in some people the smell of chlorine can make their asthma worse. If this is the case, then walking or running on a treadmill indoors may be a good option. Doing this, or anything outdoors, are usually poor choices for asthmatics. Check with your doctor, there are specific asthma medications that may work real well for you if you have exercise induced asthma. If you have severe asthma, then chances are that any strenous exercise is going to trigger it. I have this problem and my doctor recommended to me that I use my inhaler before I exercise and stop as soon as I start to have trouble breathing. Start out with something easy, swimming or walking for 5 or 10 minutes and gradually see if you can work your way up. This can actually increase your lung function and make your asthma better in the future.
