I've studied Chinese astrology for almost 18 years now and done several thousand charts. My specialty is four pillars method, particularly as applied to evaluating relationships. My next step is to learn Purple Star astrology. It identifies many more chart details, but accurate readings are time consuming and dependent upon a lifetime of acquired experience.

QUESTION: Hi, I've been waiting for the last week for you to come back, you seem very knowledgeable in Chinese astrology. I've been practicing Western astrology for the last 16 years. I've dabbled with Chinese astrology, and now I'm going into it more. I'm trying to determine compatibility between me and my husband. I'm born December 7th 1978 at 11:10am, and my husband was born October 7th 1967 at 11:52am. I've looked up some books and sites and they say I'm born the day of the Water Rabbit in the hour of the Earth Horse, in the year of the earth horse, some sources say I my lunar month is pig, others say it's rat.
My daughter was born Dec 28 2007 at 4:27pm, and I find contradictory information.
Can you tell me what we all are and where I can find that information? Also, I'm not able to clearly determine what the compatibility rating is and how it's measured (all animals with each other? then divided by all of them?)
I'm trying to learn.. Can you help me?
ANSWER: Hi Delta,
You have managed to ask many questions in one. I will tell you what all your signs are. There is contradictory information out there because there are different systems. The primary difference is some people use the lunar calendar and others the solar. I use the lunar one.
You were born during the year of the Earth Horse, month of the Wood Rat, day of the Water Rabbit and hour of the Earth Horse.
Your husband was born during the year of the Fire Sheep, month of the Metal Dog, day of the Fire Horse and hour of the Wood Horse.
Your daughter was born during the year of the Fire Pig, month of the Water Rat, day of the Fire Monkey and hour of the Fire Monkey.
From a Chinese astrology perspective your relationship compatibility is 42% favorable, which is below average. Success is certainly attainable, but it will require a lot of work and compromise from both of you.

QUESTION: Ok, thank you SO much for that answer. I do have one more question. I'm trying to understand how you determine compatibility. You say there is 42% favor in this relationship. That's terrible! What is that based on, the elements and the animals combined? Is my marriage less good because of that LOW of a compatibility?

Hi Delta,
First, I would say 42% is below average and challenging but not in the terrible range (about 30%).
It is based on the Chinese Astrology notion of four pillars, the year, month, day and time of birth. Each of the four has an animal and an element component (2 characters in the Chinese language). The exact formula is proprietary information, so I cannot release it. Any book and many web sites will provide info on the compatibility of animal to animal. As for the elements, it depends on whether or not they match up in the constructive cycle (Wood-Fire-Earth-Metal-Water) or the destructive cycle (Fire-Metal-Wood-Earth-Water-Fire). In the former adjacent elements are favorable and in the latter unfavorable.
As for the specific number 42%, you have to understand that it is like a weather forecast. If there is a 42% chance of rain tomorrow, and it rains, that 42% is as good as a 100%. So, no, it doesn't mean your marriage is less good.
What it does mean is that you may have to work harder than a majority of your peers to achieve success. And, both you and your husband need to make a concerted effort to understand and appreciate your differences. If you both do that, it can be very rewarding. So think challenging rather than doomed.
