A real conclusion about your compatibility with another person can only be made after an astrologer has examined the way many different factors interact with one another. The most important four of these are the Ascendant (for the practical compatibility), the Moon (subjective, emotional compatibility), Venus (for compatibility of sensuality and desires), and Sun (for ideological compatibility). The effect of the other planets, especially Mars, Jupiter and Saturn on these four is also very important. What you are asking about here is just one out of many aspects of a real astrological compatibility assessment.
In general though, a sign is attracted to the opposite sign (the sign 7 signs from it, counting itself as the first) for example, aries to libra, taurus to scorpio, etc.

A sign is very mutually supportive with the signs that are of the same element

Aries/Leo/Sag.
Taurus/Virgo/Cap.
Gemini/Libra/Aqu.
Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces
