Answer
Thank you for your interesting and thoughtful question, Shivkumar.

You want to know if it is possible to rank the sun signs in order of greatness and power, and if so, which one is the greatest and most powerful.

Well, IF, we could, we might come to the conclusion that everyone born under that greatest and most powerful Sun sign should therefore be among the greatest and most powerful people, right? But we find clearly and decisively that this is not that case. Therefore we must first of all understand that while there may be more powerful and less powerful zodiac signs for the Sun, this is talking about the Sun as an isolated astrological factor - NOT about the PERSON born under the Sun. To talk about the person we must see the person's complete individual horoscope and take EVERY planet into account, every sign, every house, etc.

With that said let's proceed... We must even further simply things before answering by stripping out any consideration of the other planets. When we talk about the most powerful or least powerful signs for the Sun we must first recognize and be aware of the self-imposed limitation that we will be categorically ignoring the effects of aspects, conjunctions and dispositors. For example, the Sun in a weak sign may be more beneficial in practical outcome than the Sun in a strong sign IF the "weak sign" sun has very positive aspects and conjunctions from other planets, and/or if his dispositor is well situated. Conversely the Sun in a strong sign may wind up being very troublesome and malefic in practice, if that "strong sign" sun has very negative aspects and conjunctions from other planets, and/or if his dispositor is ill-situated.

So, being aware that we are ignoring these important factors, I can now answer your question:

- The strongest sign for the Sun is Aries. Aries represents the East and the sunrise. It heralds the onset of the warm, growing part of the year (spring and summer). Aries causes the Sun to be exalted with it's fire and boldness.

- The weakest sign for the Sun is Libra. Libra represents the West and the sunset. It heralds the onset of the cold, dying part of the year (autumn and winter). Libra causes the Sun confusion in it's purpose, diverts it's attention towards material things, and squanders it's vitality.

- Second best after Aries is Leo, the Sun's home. The earlier part of Leo (the Nakshatra Magha) is particularly strong for the Sun.

Besides Aries, Leo and Libra - the remaining 9 signs are more or less neutral. The remaining fire Sign, Sagittarius, is positive. The remaining Air signs, Gemini and Aquarius might be positive for the Sun, if their rulers (Mercury and Saturn respectively) are at a favorable distance from the Sun in an individual horoscope. The Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) are not inherently desirable for the Sun unless their rulers are at favorable distances from him. The Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are inherently *interesting* for the Sun as they cause the solar energy to be directed unusually inwardly and emotionally. But they can be quite troublesome if their rulers are not at a favorable distance from the Sun in the individual's horoscope.
