About Zane B Stein Expertise I WILL BE HAPPY TO answer questions about astrology in general, the meanings of planets, signs, houses, aspects, asteroids, Chiron, etc. I use Western, Tropical Astrology. Please do not ask me questions about Vedic Astrology as I am not an expert on this.
I WILL NOT ANSWER PERSONAL QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR INDIVIDUAL CHART, such as "Will I get rich?" or "Will I get married?", or "Are we compatible?" I do have a private astrological practice, and if you need to ask those type of questions, contact me privately and we`ll discuss a possible astrologer/client relationship. Also, I cannot answer questions about Vedic Astrology, or Chinese Astrology.
Also, astrology is NOT "What is my lucky stone?" or "What is my lucky color?" or "What are my lucky numbers?" Any astrologer who gives you a lucky object, or number, based on your chart, is not a real astrologer, but someone who is giving in to superstition. In order to find out how to enhance your luck, you need to have an astrologer look at your whole chart, and tell you what areas you need to focus upon, how to accent your positives, and work to resolve any problems that exist.
Experience I've been involved with astrology since 1969, taught classes on several occasions, written a number of articles and one book, and lectured around the USA, in Canada, Great Britain, Scotland and Ireland.

I was wondering what the importance of your ascending sign is. I think each house represents a specific area in your life like work, relationhips, etc. - but what about the rising sign? I also read somewhere about a descending sign - what is its significance?
Thanks! Carolyn
Answer Hi, Carolyn,
You are quite correct...each house represents areas of life and what goes on within them.
The Ascending Sign...also known as the Rising Sign...is the cusp of the first house. This is several things:
1. It is that part of you that you project most outwardly, so it is what people first see about you when they meet you, or when you first enter a room. If it is drastically different than your Sun Sign, then when people get to know you they may be quite surprised that you are not what they expected. (For good or bad, actually, depending upon whether they like the rising sign and dislike the Sun sign, or the reverse, or like them both.) So part of understanding your chart is understanding what part of yourself you project, and how it is similar or differs from your conscious focus (Sun), and the rest of the chart as well.
2. Because it is the first impression you make, it shapes the way the world reacts to you, so this sign also governs how you see your immediate world. This is why everyone sees the world differently from everyone else.
3. It also has a lot to do with he state of your physical body, at least the external parts of the body.
The 7th house, or Descendant, or Descending sign, is always exactly opposite the rising sign. It deals with people you interact with on a one-to-one basis, which can be both partners, competitors, and even open enemies. It is also the house that describes how you see partnerships, and what your ideal partnership would be like, and is part of the whole picture denoting your ideal partner. (For the partner, though, you also need to take into account Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars.)
