I believe I am going through my Saturn return now.
Does it have to be so rocky?
Maybe it would have been calmer in another country
like Malaysia.
What can one do to calm the waters?
Typically, a saturn return will coincide with your preparedness to go on to a new dimension of maturity; you will outgrow certain things, and your capacity increases to push yourself even further.
The saturn return is only rocky when your natal saturn relates to other conflicting planets at birth. A return of transiting saturn back to its natal position will then activate that conflict. Otherwise, the return does not typically produce any 'difficult' challenges.
As to whether it will be 'calmer' in other countries, that would depend a lot on an analysis of the Relocation Chart that you should want to do for yourself if you are considering such a move.
