Much of Chinese thought, be it philosophy, medicine, or astrology, for example, is based on five element theory.

The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. There are many things associated with these. One of course is stages of life. They are: birth, youth, maturation, mid-life, and retirement.

There is an (fixed) element associated with each stage. Each person also has their own element associated with each stage depending on their chart factors. The relationship between the fixed element and an individual's can be positive, negative or neutral. For example Wood is associated with birth. If an individual's birth element is Water, which nourishes Wood, that is favorable.

Two other factors are important. That is the amount of chi in each stage and the influence operating at each stage.

The Chinese believe chi (energy/life force) varies during a person's life. A person is better able to achieve goals during a period of high chi and may find life difficult during a stage in which chi is low. The amount of chi is based on the mix of elements in the chart.

Also, at each stage of life one influence has a greater impact than others. The five generally considered include: fate, wealth, recognition, health/happiness and creativity. Of these the most important is fate. Fate is a time when the direction of life is settled for a long time, if not permanently.
