Astronomy/Our earth

Question
Hi Tom
Just wanted to ask you about our earths energys. How a live is the earth that most people wouldn't be aware of? It's being said that everything that surrounds us is not solid, that it is vibrating at one speed or another. Are all scientists in a agreement with this? In what way are we connected to the earth in terms of energy?
THANK U SO MUCH

Answer
Hi Julie-Ann,
At the cost of perhaps responding to either a metaphysics or an
occult question....I can only offer up this...
All energies are not 'alive'....any substance above absolute zero
contains some heat (and therefore energy) at the molecular level, but this is all not classified as life...life is a chemical process whereby energy is consumed by a carbon-based organism, reproduction occurs, and waste products are excreted, that is life.  I am referring to only the macro-level and the way it operates. Certainly
objects with a lot of energy, like the sun, a fast flowing stream,
high winds,....are not 'living' entities, and are not 'alive'.

On the very very small quantum level, yes you are correct. Matter at
the extreme sub-sub-sub atomic level takes on different characteristics which we are not used to observing in our everyday
life, and even different laws too, which don't apply at the macro level, laws called quantum mechanics.
(And of course the reverse is true too...our macro laws, gravity,
electromagnetics, strong and weak nuclear force....do not always
apply at the quantum level either). It's almost like two separate
but co-existing worlds.
The theory you are thinking of, is called string theory, where everything is ultimately composed of vibrating 'strings' or waves
down at the Planck level (10 to the minus 43rd power centimeter)
and smaller. No, science is not yet in agreement with all this because string theory is so new, and as yet no test has been devised to test it because of a string's extremely small size. I've read where if an atom could be expanded to the size of the Solar System,
then a 'string' is about the size of an Oak tree.
{So in reality, string theory not part of science as yet, it's still in the philosophical (non-science) realm}....because it's not observable or testable or repeatable. So there are vast disagreements, in fact, last I heard there are 5 or 10 'different' competing string theories!  But no way exists as yet to determine which is the correct one, IF any of them... are correct.
So until technology catches up with our new ideas, we just have to
wait and bide our time. (It's been said that string theory is a late
21st Century idea that happened to fall into the early 21st and late 20th century)....so we just have to...hold suspended judgment for a while...on the ultimate result(s) of that very very tiny tiny world.

But since we don't live in the quantum world, we don't have to worry
about it's effects or laws on us...we live in the macro-world of gravity, electromagnetic, etc. so everyday life is not to be concerned with what goes on down at the sub-sub-sub atomic quantum world. So you still have to eat, sleep, clothing, shelter, and have a good 401k or ROTH IRA for a successful retirement, and just let
the nuclear physicists worry about their sub-atomic world which they
currently are investigating...and I'm sure someday we can all read
their conclusions. But none of it affects us at the macroworld level.
It's interesting, but not germane to everyday life.
Hope this helps,
Clear Skies,

Expertise

Astronomy has been my hobby/pasttime for over 50 years.  Currently own 3 telescopes, the largest of which is a 30 inch Newtonian truss Dob that is portable.I taught Astronomy/Meteorology at the University Level for 13 years before retiring in 1995. Being retired and home most of the time, I am able to answer all questions relatively quickly, unless it's a new moon weekend with good observing conditions.  No astrology questions please, or questions about alleged UFO picture identifications.
