Answer
Hi,
1
check out this link:- http://www.dandennis.com/diamond.htm .
To resist heat, the windows on the space shuttle are coated with a synthetic diamond sheet.

2 -
Check out this one:- http://www.scomac.com/
This company has been doing the diamond work for space right from the first manned mission in space to the space shuttle of today.

Other references will crop up if you google efficiently enough.

The where is where high temperature mechanical stability is required and viewing has to be done (windows etc of spacecraft that get heated at re-entry).

The why is obvious! Diamond remains stable upto very high temperatures.
