Astronomy/Global warming and holes in the ozone layer.
Expert: Tom Whiting - 2/12/2009
QuestionI am working on a project for my Problem Solving class @ ITT-Tech and I need to develop a strategy for demonstrating a relationship between the two atmospheric effects of global warming and the holes in the ozone layer. I need to find out if: -The two phenomena share the same cause, -One phenomena causes the other, or -The two phenomena produce the same effect?
AnswerHi Michelle,They don't...see below; but isn't this more of a meteorological or climatological question? No matter, since I taught Meteorology and Historical Geology for nearly 15 years, I can perhaps help you.First, right of the top, WHO says that there is...global warming?Al Gore? You believe a defunct politician? The liberal press and all those action committees that get governmentfunds to continue to promote same for financial reasons? Then I have some swampland in Florida you might be interested in. ;-) In fact, this planet peaked in 1998 and has been downhill(precipitously in fact) ever since. Many REAL scientists fear thatin reality, we are entering a period of the opposite...global cooling. The evidence? No sunspots...cycle 24 should have already started, but there are very few spots on the sun, see www.spaceweather.com(And while you are at it, Google Maunder Minimum.)China had their coldest winter in the last 100 years last year.Snow for the first time ever in Baghdad and Athens; severe frostsin Central Florida, New England states had a killing frost BEFOREthe first day of Autumn in 2008, September 20th.In the same area, we've been anywhere from 10 to 30 degrees BELOWnormal or average since October thru today, Feb. 11.Volcanic SO2 and ash in the stratosphere causes cooling; Alaska hada volcano erupt in late 2008 and now Mount Redoubt in Alaska is onthe verge of exploding....google it, Mount Redoubt. If it blows, that will increase the cooling with volcanic ash in the stratosphere. So it's quite evident that the liberal politicians are using so called false global warming to obtain funds while other individuals are using it to sell their books to make lots of money. It also makes for good news story....what could be more attractive than catastrophic global warming? Print all that bad stuff, likeend of the world, Aliens arriving, Jupiter effect, etc etc. The ozone hole in the Southern hemisphere was real, and caused mainlyby the use of chloro-fluro-hydrocarbons (CFO's) like freon and hairspray propellant. Since those products have been outlawed, the South Pole ozone hole is slowly recovering and is almost back to normal. There is no correlation between CO2 in our atmosphere causingfalse global warming and the ozone destruction by the CFO's.The two are totally unrelated, in reality. Ozone depletion simplyallows UV radiation (not infrared or heat) from the sun to comethru the atmosphere, raising the risk of skin cancer, whereas CO2affects Infrared (heat) radiation to come in, but not escape. Sothe two effects and processes are totally unrelated, like comparingtennis to football...the only thing they have in common is the...ball (sun). The current CO2 concentration of our atmosphere is at 0.035% or thereabouts...78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen leaves 1%...other. And 9/10of that other...is Argon. So CO2 only constitutes around 0.035%.If you ever take a historical geology course, you will learn thatperiods of the Triassic and Jurassic periods we had...get this...from 1-3% carbon dioxide, average global temperatures were 80 degrees(not the 59 degrees of today) there was vegetation from pole to pole(read that...lots of food) AND this planet did just fine that wayfor over 50 million years! Stable, no runaway.....anything, and life thrived for millions of years that way. And we're "worried"about an increase from 0.035% up to 0.04% by the end of the century? That borders on ..... insanity. So your project is very easy...two words...."zero corellation"unless you also want to skew the data just like the 'global warmists'do, or just outright lie -and fudge the data- like the others thatget government funds, are doing. That's my take on it, which is what you asked for, my opinion.Hope this helps,Clear Skies,Tom WhitingErie, PA

Also, read the open letter to the UN sent in by over 100 scientists
from around the world...you won't read this in the liberal press...

Perhaps a better topic (and very up to date) would be to correlate
the known number of Earth-Crossing asteroids (up to about 1025 of
them now) with actual impacts that the Earth has experienced. These
are real, and global life threatening, that's why we are now tracking
them.
The list can be seen at the bottom of the page on
http://www.spaceweather.com
and I'm sure you can google past Earth impacts of asteroids, and
perhaps form a correlation there.
Just trying to help,
