Astronomy/Before big bang

Question
What was before big bang and how it created?

Answer
According to quantum mechanics, any point in space can undergo random fluctuations in energy, as long as they are too small or short-lived to notice. Taking all of space and time into account, there are an unimaginable number of "points" of apparently empty space-time in which this takes place. An almost infinitely small fraction of those can have a fluctuation so large that it creates a completely new space-time -- that is, a new Universe, which is completely separate from the original. In the old Universe, there is no sign that anything has happened. In the new one, there is no sign that there was a previous Universe, because the new Universe only contains the space-time created in the instant of its creation, and the space-time created as it expanded from the "Big Bang" which resulted from its formation.

Given this theory, it is believed that our Universe was created from a single point of space-time in a previous Universe, and through the Big Bang which resulted from the energy fluctuation in that point of space-time, expanded to a virtually infinite size, in practically no time at all.

I have given only a brief discussion of this here, because there happens to be a thorough discussion of the topic on my website, at http://cseligman.com/text/prologue.htm

After you read that page, if you are confused about the concepts involved (which isn't at all unusual), please feel free to ask for a clarification.

Expertise

I can answer almost any question about astronomy and related sciences, such as physics and geology. I will not answer questions about astrology and similar pseudo-scientific rubbish.

Experience

I have been a professor of astronomy for over 40 years, and am working on an online text/encyclopedia of astronomy.

Publications
Astronomical Journal, Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (too long ago to be really relevant, but you could search for Courtney Seligman on Google Scholar)

Education/Credentials
I received a BA in astronomy and physics and a MA in astronomy, both from UCLA. I was working on my doctoral dissertation when I started teaching, and discovered that I preferred teaching to research.

Awards and Honors
(too long ago to be relevant, but Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi still keep trying to get me to become a paying member)
