Question
Hi,
Many people and scientist do not believe in an intelligent creator. One of the reasons being is the question; “where did he come from” etc…. My question is; even if you don’t believe in an infinite creator you still have to wonder where did the first material, mass  or whatever come from? Doesn’t someone or something have to be infinite? 0+0 = 0 Have you ever heard any theories on this?

Burt

Answer
Dear Burt!
(It is all about connections)..
But Who is stopping you from wondering?
Science in fact encourages one to wonder at things and then feel impelled to find out why!

When one says..."This is all Bull! Believe in your god the creator because..."and so on..as you seem to be driving at, one actually implies..."Cease to wonder, and accept the given truth!!".

This attittude led to the inquisition in Europe some 300 years ago! It has caused innumerable religious wars too.

Science teaches one to be humble. It acknowledges what it does not know, the lacunae in what it does know, and strives to know more, even to question and refine what it already knows.

Dont belittle this. 0+0=0 , infinty ...al this is easy to say...people of towering intellect have given their lives for knowledge..secular ..bright ...light of knowledge.
(Bruno's and galeleo's cases are points here).

What is so wrong to say "we do not now know where all this came from, but we plan to know some day and are ever strivig to know more"?
It sounds much more sincere than the harangue of some bible thumping hegemon of a priest who admonishes one to "BELIEVE"...all the time. (Rather like children playing games it looks to me).

What's wrong in NOT knowing?
Why supplant what one does not know with a beared jealous God and his doings?
I fail entirely to understand.
Burt, one must support science unfailingly. If you see a pandemic such as the infuenza pandemic / the black death , live its fears really, then you will perhaps begin to understand how much humans have benefitted from science.
If they use it destructively, it is the practitioners who are to blame not science itself.

Regarding theories...well As sagan so nicely puts it, as the matter is wave or particle debate rages, we may some day realise that it is all a dream in the mindscape of a superbeing we all call GOD!

The hindus long ago named it MAHAT the mind matter of Brahma, and that the world is but an enduring illusion created by that mind. (Maya).

Nice "theory" that one...for it says all that we call as matter is but an illusion. A disturbance on the still waters of brahmas mind. Masters (like the jedi) know how to manipulate and play with it, materialising and dematerialising "things" just by "connecting" with this universal mind..the "force of the jedi"!!
Hence the age old hindu word "yoga" (to connect & use)...
who knows the english word "use" may have ancient roots in yoga! for one form of the word describing such a connection is "yuj".."yujya" .."yojana" (to plan)..all derivatives.
Interesting isnt it?
