Question
Good morning,
I am trying to help my son who is 16yrs old and wanting to pursue colleges with strong schools in physics, math and astronomy.  Can you help me narrow down some really outstanding colleges in these areas of studies.  Also, about potential careers in these areas.  Do you need a Masters or Doctorate? Can you refer me to a website or name some of the jobs available in these areas?

Thank you

Answer
Tracy:

Well, this could be a very long answer, but I will try to keep it brief.  I will talk about colleges here in the NY area, since this is where I am from.  There is Union College in Schenectady, and Williams in MA.  Both have very good physics and Astronomy departments.  Then of course, there is Cornell in Ithaca.  It all depends on how your son wants to go into the Astronomy field.  To be a professional Astronomer, work in an observatory or for NASA, a MAsters in Astronomy would be helpfull.  However, there are things to do in Astronomy that are very different.  I have spent my entire career, 34 years of it, teaching Astronomy in planetariums.  My BA Degree is in American History and Political Science, and my Masters degree is in Science Education.
