Astronomy - Strange red pulsing object in sky!

Expert: Heather - 9/24/2004

Question
We only started noticing it about a week ago - before that I haven't been aware of its presence. :) I don't have the equipment to take its picture, sorry!
Should I call it in to my local observatory?

Hello Heather!

I hope you can help me with this, because it's become something of a mystery here at home!
I live in Ottawa Canada, and to the west after about 7:45, a red pulsing object can be seen quite clearly. It's easily distinguished, even with all the street lights around the neighborhood. Upon using binoculars and a modest telescope, it changes colour! From red, fuscia, green, and cyan - then it cycles again.
What is this object? A satellite? Something else? We joke that it's a disco ball, but I'd like to hear what it really is!
Thank you!
Emilie
Answer -
Hmm, I really have no idea what this is, has it just started or was it something that's always happened? I'd like a picture if you could.

Answer
Wow, I'd have to say this is my quickest reply ever! The only logical thing to say about it before I go crying UFO is that it might be an object on earth in the distance that's man made, changing colors. You can feel free to call your local observatory, but they might not be able to find the object you speak of, it might only be able to be seen certain places, but its worth a shot. I'd love to hear back once they shed some light on it :)
